That clunk was me hitting the proverbial wall

Thank you to my new internet friends for making me feel a whole lot better about myself the other day. As my friend Auntie Nettie knows, I don’t make friends easily. She has been my friend/put up with me since our first day of college almost 18 years ago. She has been there through just about everything important that has happened to me in those years, including being my maid of honor (horror, as she called it) at my wedding. So to Auntie Nettie and all my new internet friends, thank you for cheering me up when I was so very much down.

I think I’ve hit a wall. Annie and Izzie are fighting me hard on naps the past couple of days. When the girls don’t nap, I don’t get anything done. Drew doesn’t nap anymore anyway unless we’re in the car. And while I LOVE my boy, he’s turned into a little whiney man these days and it’s making me crazy. I’m tired of waking the girls up to go to the bus to get Meg. I think I’m just plain tired. We race around from the bus stop to quick dinners to softball or chorus concert. There are 4 huge loads of laundry waiting to be folded in my bedroom which I can’t stand looking at, but have no desire to fold. I need a haircut, but to get one requires a)that my hairdresser work today and she doesn’t or b)taking the kids with me tomorrow which is totally stressful. Wow, I can’t even read what I wrote without thinking that I sound like a complete whiney brat. Sigh.

On a good note, Megan had her first grade choral concert last night. We bought a sweet outfit at The Children’s Place for a mere $12 that she wore and she looked beautiful, and sang so sweetly. Last year at the kindergarten concert, we arrived late and coming in late was so stressful that she didn’t sing a word. Last night we arrived 30 minutes early (which as you know, I am all for!) and good thing we did. The middle school gym was PACKED. It was so nice to see her singing and having fun. I took pictures but they’re grayish. Here’s one anyway (she’s in the pink and her friend Samantha is in the yellowish-green). And yes, she really is super tall for a 7 year old.
I’m looking for ways to cheer myself up today. My darn good cup of coffee isn’t helping. Any suggestions oh wise internets?

  1. Look at some pictures of flowers online. Set your timer for 10 or 15 minutes and fold some laundry. Fold half the time and put away the other half. Set the kids in front of the tv and have a nice hot shower. Do another 15 minutes of laundry.Eat some chocolate.

  2. Oooo, I think that wall stretches across several states to my house. I will name it the Great Nap Wall. We are back to napping though. Mostly. I’ve found that if I wait too long to put them down they resist. Plus, we need to be home by a certain time to give them enough time to unwind and eat lunch or they won’t nap. And I’ve renamed it quiet time and they listed to a CD of “princess” (Beauty and the beast) music in their cribs. To jump start my motivation, I set my timer for 20 minutes of computer time and when that’s finished I’ll set it for 15 minutes of picking up the living room and 15 minutes of digging out Mt. Washmore. After that I’ll get another 20 minutes of me time and we’ll repeat the pattern until naptime is over. Oh, and it’s okay to send Drew to his room for an hour of quiet time if Annie/Izzie are down for their naps. :-)Glad the concert went well and if you can’t whine on your blog where can you?

  3. lock the kids in a room and take a nap : ) OF COURSE I’M KIDDING! crank up some music and sing your lungs out? that helps me sometimes.look at pictures of when your kids were really, really little (i know your’s are still young, but remember the sweet times?)hooray for meg’s performance!just remember, the funk shall pass even if it doesn’t seem like it will.

  4. Wow, I go away for a week and I miss so much! I’m catching up on your posts.It must be the time of year, because the twins aren’t napping either, and they are super-cranky, and they are waking up at 5:20 am!Going outside always makes me feel a ton better. Hope you can take some good walks!

  5. I am SO WITH YOU on the being sick of running constantly!! Since we moved, I have to drive both kids to school, on opposite ends of town, then three hours later get Patrick, three hours after that get Josie, and two to three hours after that go to soccer-choir-piano-soccer-dog training-soccer. Ugh. My house is still a wreck, the pets are insane… hey, you definitely deserve to whine once in awhile!!!!Go to Blockbuster and get the kids a movie. While they watch it, fold the laundry and then have a cup of coffee, alone, preferably while reading fluffy magazines.

  6. I know it’s easier said then done, but make some alone time for yourself. Take a walk, take a drive, take a bath. By YOURSELF! Even if it means hiring a babysitter or waiting till night time when the kids are asleep.Also, I’m not sure of the exact address, but google The Positivity Blog, I check out this blog a lot, and especially when I’m feeling down in the dumps.Cheer up!
