Boy Time

I got to spend some quality time, alone, with just Drew yesterday. He was recovering from some little virus that kept him home from school Monday, and all the girls had school, so it was just the two of us. It occurred to me that he and I haven’t had any real time alone in about four years. He was just a little guy when Annie and Izzie were born and has had to share all of his life with siblings.

We started our morning riding back from taking Annie and Izzie to school talking about WHY Anakin turned to the Dark Side and WHY the clone troopers were good, then bad. It was a very deep, philosophical conversation, and I tried to couch it in terms of patience, greed~you know, the usual reasons why someone would turn to the Dark Side. Anakin/Darth Vader is his FAVORITE character, which is on one level cute, and another level, disturbing (for the record, Han Solo has always been my favorite). He is quite obsessed with Star Wars, having been given a couple of Star Wars Lego toys from his friend for his birthday, and then a selection of toys from one of Meg’s friends. We got him the soundtracks to the original movies for Christmas and he listens to them all day and night long.

After a quick snack and a couple of games of Angry Birds (his other obsession~watching me play and being my cheering section) he grabbed some toys and set up shop in the living room. Given that we don’t have a Death Star or Millennium Falcon, the Batcave had to suffice.

Later we colored in a Christmas coloring book, and talked about his favorite things about kindergarten~he loves math and his favorite specials are library and PE. We didn’t have very long to spend together, only a couple of hours, but it was so nice to just spend time with my little boy.

  1. I love one-on-one time. I’m sure it made Drew feel ALL better to have some of momma’s undivided attention. What a sweet boy (tell him to fight his dark side)!

  2. sounds like a wonderful morning together. can’t tell you how many conversations i’ve had with my guys that revolve around star wars. 🙂
ps that batcave is the ONLY thing griff wants for his 4th bday. glad to see he’ll enjoy it for awhile. 🙂

  3. i love one on one time. i also don’t get as much of it w/ my boy as i’d like. he too went through a star wars phase and also liked the dark side. i think that’s part of being a boy….the lure of the power and mystery of the “dark side.” of course mine (at a younger age) also went through a spiderman phase and wore a spidey costume for years under his clothes.
